Ben Stokes is poised to return to competitive cricket next week as Durham prepares to kick off its One-Day Cup campaign against Derbyshire. The 35-year-old all-rounder, who surprised the cricket world by retiring from international play last month, is expected to play a leading role in Durham’s 50-over matches beginning Tuesday.

Stokes announced his retirement during the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, England’s captain delivering the news mid-way through a lengthy bowling spell. Despite the sudden revelation, he continued to perform, taking a wicket with his very next delivery and later opening the batting in what became his final Test innings.

Following his departure from international cricket, Stokes took some time off to be with his family before recommitting to domestic cricket. He had previously decided not to participate in The Hundred tournament, focusing instead on Durham’s limited-overs season.

His return is anticipated to boost Durham’s prospects in the One-Day Cup, where Stokes’s all-round abilities have previously made a significant impact.
