Stop & Shop’s website was restored on Tuesday morning following a cyberattack that disrupted the grocery chain’s online services for more than a week. The outage impacted online ordering and access to loyalty program benefits not only for Stop & Shop but also for its sister chains Hannaford and Giant Food.

The parent company, Ahold Delhaize, confirmed the incident involved “malicious actions” and reported the attack to law enforcement authorities in the Netherlands. While physical stores continued operating throughout the disruption and offered discounts to customers shopping in person, many shoppers faced challenges in obtaining groceries, particularly in rural areas that lack third-party delivery options.

Customers affected by the outage, such as Shawn Marie Schaffer, reported difficulties managing their usual grocery needs during the period when digital services were unavailable. Experts in cybersecurity explained that restoring systems after such attacks can be a complex and time-consuming process, as it requires identifying and removing vulnerabilities. They also warned that attackers may have remained undetected within networks for extended periods prior to the discovery of the breach.

Though there is currently no evidence indicating that customer data was compromised, Ahold Delhaize advised consumers to remain vigilant against potential scams that could arise in the wake of the service interruption. The attack is believed to have been financially motivated, taking advantage of the urgency large retailers face to resume operations quickly in order to minimize economic and reputational damage.

The outage not only disrupted online shopping and loyalty rewards but also affected customers’ daily routines, underscoring the growing risks that cyber incidents pose to critical retail infrastructure.
