Perth-based maritime security and data analytics firm Overwatch Technologies made its debut on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on Friday following a successful initial public offering (IPO) that raised $8 million. The company, which trades under the ticker OWL, valued itself at $26.7 million with an issue price of 20 cents per share, closing the first day of trading at 17.5 cents after opening at 19 cents.

The IPO comes amid heightened focus on maritime security, particularly following significant disruptions to global trade due to the recent blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which approximately 20 million barrels of oil pass daily. Overwatch aims to capitalize on growing demand from governments and defense agencies for enhanced maritime surveillance and data analytics in the Indo-Pacific region.

Co-founder and executive chairman Harry Karelis said the firm is positioned to establish sustainable revenue streams. “The support shown by both existing and new investors through our successful IPO gives us the resources to execute a clear growth strategy: building capability, expanding sales channels across the Indo-Pacific and progressing towards securing recurring maritime surveillance-as-a-service revenue,” he said. Karelis emphasized the company’s commitment to creating long-term value while helping national security clients address increasingly complex maritime challenges.

Prior to listing, major shareholders included the Gemelli family trust from Western Australia, Vinea Corp, and WRS Group, each holding approximately 15.7 percent of shares, with UBS also a significant pre-IPO shareholder at 3.1 percent.

Overwatch combines licensed autonomous radiofrequency detection hardware with proprietary analytics software to collect and convert data from maritime vessels into actionable intelligence. The company’s business model focuses on developing three main revenue streams: sales of one-off hardware systems and sensors, a growing “maritime surveillance-as-a-service” platform designed to provide ongoing mission support and recurring income, and eventually monetizing the data it collects.

The company highlighted the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific’s vast exclusive economic zones and major shipping lanes, including the Strait of Malacca, where around 100,000 vessels transit annually. Overwatch views these factors as drivers for regional governments’ increasing prioritization of maritime security amid a complex and uncertain geopolitical environment.

Funds raised from the IPO will support Overwatch’s expansion and development as it seeks to grow its revenue base and deepen market penetration across the Indo-Pacific.
