Media City Qatar is advancing strategic plans to position the State of Qatar as a leading global hub in the media and innovation industry, according to Hamad Omar al-Mannai, its CEO. The initiative focuses on fostering a comprehensive media ecosystem by supporting local production, attracting international companies, and nurturing talent to solidify Qatar’s role within the global media landscape.

In an interview with Qatar News Agency, al-Mannai highlighted the recent hosting of the “Global Perspectives: In Doha” event, organised by CNN in collaboration with Media City Qatar. This marked the first time the event took place in the Middle East and Gulf region and was described as an important milestone that strengthens Qatar’s regional and international media presence.

Qatar is already home to prominent media institutions such as Al Jazeera, Qatar TV, and beIN, which al-Mannai said represent the country’s current “final product” stage in media development. The role of Media City Qatar, he explained, is to cultivate the broader environment needed to build the industry from the ground up by attracting global media firms and creative talent. This approach aims to establish Qatar as a major hub and headquarters for content production and media innovation.

Significant advancements have been made within the Media City Qatar Innovation Lab, which brings together key media organisations to tackle industry challenges using emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. Al-Mannai reported that workshops held through this initiative generated between 110 and 120 innovative ideas, with 27 projects selected for further development. Two major projects are already underway, including the implementation of a system that reviews scripts and analyses scenes to offer intelligent recommendations for optimal filming locations within Qatar, thereby supporting the growth of local film and television production.

The strategy followed by Media City Qatar aligns with the country’s broader national objectives, particularly the Third National Development Strategy and the Qatar National Vision 2030. The plan is structured around three pillars aimed at boosting the media sector’s contribution to the national economy, encouraging startups to establish headquarters in Qatar, and expanding their operations within a dynamic market environment.

In partnership with CNN, Media City Qatar also supports professional development through the CNN Academy, which provides workshops, courses, and hands-on training opportunities for Qatari talent, including university students. This initiative seeks to localise expertise and build knowledge across various media disciplines.

Al-Mannai noted that beyond offering facilities, incentive packages, and talent development programs, Media City Qatar’s competitive advantage lies in its integrated infrastructure. The platform is connected to local telecommunications networks and maintains a strategic partnership with the Qatar Satellite Company (Es’hailSat), enabling comprehensive, end-to-end solutions for broadcasting and production entities.

Reaffirming the commitment to bolster local content, al-Mannai emphasized efforts to bring Qatari media productions to global audiences through strategic distribution plans, international collaborations, and active participation in major media forums and exhibitions. These initiatives underscore Qatar’s ambition to become a pivotal force in the global media industry.
