A Bernese Mountain Dog named Svea played a key role in helping her owner recover from a stroke and in overcoming his wife's longstanding fear of dogs. Pete Weltenius, 56, who suffered a life-altering stroke at the age of 48, retired from his removal company following the event. Svea joined their family as a puppy and became an integral part of his rehabilitation and new lifestyle.
Weltenius, along with his wife Jenny Whelan, 50, from the Isle of Wight, embarked on a sailing adventure around the UK with Svea. According to Whelan, Svea encouraged Pete’s physical activity through daily walks and interactive games, which contributed to maintaining his mobility and lifting his spirits during his recovery. The dog’s presence also helped Whelan confront and ultimately overcome her fear of dogs, which stemmed from being bitten in childhood.
The couple credits Svea not only with aiding Pete’s recovery but also with enhancing their quality of life through shared outdoor activities and the new sailing experiences. Their journey underscores the therapeutic potential of animal companionship in stroke recovery and emotional healing.
