An elementary school teacher and a fifth-grade student died Tuesday during a field trip to Lake Macbride State Park in Iowa, local authorities and school officials confirmed.

Hannah Jorgensen, 24, a teacher at Borlaug Elementary School, was found deceased inside the Coralville Reservoir shortly after the incident occurred. Approximately 25 hours later, divers recovered the body of 10-year-old student Ahmed Osman from the same reservoir.

The pair had been participating in a “School of the Wild” field trip at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area, organized by the Iowa City Community School District. Details surrounding how Jorgensen and Osman ended up in the water have not been determined, and the circumstances remain under investigation.

Following the reported incident, a large-scale search-and-recovery operation was launched, involving the Johnson County Metro Dive Team, local fire departments, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, State Patrol, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and medical personnel. Teams worked throughout the area in an effort to locate the missing individuals.

Officials have not released further information regarding the cause of the incident or how the two entered the reservoir. Investigators continue to examine the situation to determine the events leading up to the tragedy.
