Radical student groups have postponed planned nationwide protests by one day, moving their demonstrations from Remembrance Day, November 11, to November 12. The decision comes amid growing public and political criticism of the original timing of the events.
The protests, organized by a collective calling itself High School Anti-Capitalists, were intended as school walkouts opposing both the One Nation political party and capitalism. Initially scheduled to coincide with Remembrance Day, the group cited inspiration from recent violent student protests in France, which have seen widespread unrest, including injuries, rioting, and the deployment of armed forces.
Veterans’ organizations expressed their support for the students’ right to protest but strongly condemned the choice to hold the events on Remembrance Day. Public response echoed this sentiment, with a poll of more than 4,600 readers revealing that 73 percent wanted the rallies canceled outright. Another 24 percent agreed the date should be changed, while only 3 percent believed protests could proceed respectfully on November 11.
Following the backlash, the High School Anti-Capitalists announced via social media that the walkouts and associated protests would now take place on November 12. Despite the change in schedule, the group confirmed that demonstrations would continue as planned in major cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra.
In their public statement, organizers maintained that selecting November 11 initially was coincidental and did not intend to interfere with Remembrance Day observances. The protests are expected to maintain their focus on opposition to One Nation policies and capitalist economic structures.
