Matthew Hollingham, a 25-year-old student from Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, is preparing for a new endurance challenge: running a 114-mile route along side roads and footpaths that closely trace the circumference of the M25 motorway. The planned run aims to raise funds for children’s charities and honor the memory of Hollingham’s late fiancée, Lovisa Arnesson-Cronhamre, who died in a hit-and-run accident in 2023.
Hollingham, who previously completed an extraordinary triathlon covering eight countries from the Arctic to Africa, intends to circumnavigate the orbital motorway outside of its main carriageways. He emphasized the need for the route to be off the motorway itself, citing legal restrictions and concerns about disrupting traffic. “What’s more moronic than running the M25?” he remarked, explaining his motivation to undertake what he describes as a “stupid-sounding” fundraising event.
The challenge is expected to be difficult, particularly in navigating some sections such as crossing the River Thames near Dartford, a logistical detail Hollingham said he is still working to resolve. Despite the anticipated obstacles, he expressed determination to complete the route, driven by the memory of Arnesson-Cronhamre.
Just weeks before announcing his M25 run, Hollingham completed a grueling 61-day triathlon that included swimming through icy waters, running 37 marathons consecutively, and cycling 1,865 miles across eight nations. That event raised approximately £30,000 for causes important to the couple.
Arnesson-Cronhamre was a student at Pennsylvania State University when she lost her life in the accident. Hollingham spoke emotionally about her dreams and their shared future. “She always wanted to be a mother,” he said, reflecting on the personal loss that fuels his fundraising efforts. “She is, and will always be, my fiancée.”
Hollingham’s latest endeavor highlights his commitment to combining endurance sports with philanthropy while coping with his bereavement. He has invited suggestions from the public on overcoming route challenges and hopes his journey will inspire support for the charitable causes he champions.
