Subang Jaya came alive with the sound of young voices during the Subang Jaya Merdeka Symphony Choir Competition, held recently at Subang Parade in Selangor. The event brought together 19 choirs from primary and secondary schools across the Klang Valley, offering students a platform to develop their musical talents while fostering teamwork and self-confidence.
Organised by the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) in partnership with the Petaling Perdana District Education Office and Hektar Property Services Sdn Bhd, the competition coincided with the nation’s National Month and Malaysia Day 2026 celebrations. The event was officially launched by Subang Jaya Deputy Mayor Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali, who highlighted the significance of the occasion beyond musical performance.
“The Subang Jaya Merdeka Symphony is not just a choir competition, but a stage that gives our children the opportunity to showcase their talents, work as a team and experience the spirit of patriotism,” Mohd Zulkurnain said. He emphasized that the choir’s unity exemplified Malaysia’s multicultural identity, underscoring how diverse voices coming together reflect communal harmony and collective progress.
According to the deputy mayor, patriotism involves maintaining social cohesion, respecting diversity, preserving the environment, and fulfilling one’s societal responsibilities. The initiative aligns with the council’s vision to promote community values and the Smart People concept within the Subang Jaya Madani Smart City framework, which prioritizes morality, knowledge, and charity.
In the competition results, SJK(C) Serdang Baru 1 from Seri Kembangan won the primary school category, with runners-up SJK(C) Han Ming in Puchong and SK Subang Jaya. In the secondary school division, SMK Taman Tun Dr Ismail from Kuala Lumpur claimed first place, followed by SMK Seafield in Subang Jaya and SMK Sri Permata in Petaling Jaya.
Special awards recognizing Most Creative Choir, Best Vocals, and Jury’s Choice were also presented, celebrating outstanding performances and creativity.
The event supports broader regional and international goals, contributing to the state’s Second Selangor Plan (RS-2) which seeks to nurture young talent, as well as advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 focused on quality education and SDG 11 emphasizing sustainable cities and communities through active public participation.
Key attendees included Petaling Perdana PPD Deputy District Education Officer Fadzlon Faisal, Hektar Property Services CEO Aldela Puspa Nordin, Subang Parade Centre Manager Mohamed Mohamed Hanafiah, and MBSJ Zone 1 Councillor Chia Yew Ken. Organisers noted the competition’s role in strengthening community bonds and enriching the cultural landscape of Subang Jaya.
