A recent study involving researchers from the University of Exeter, Lancaster University, and Fiji Shark Lab has revealed that bull sharks exhibit a preference for socializing with relatives rather than unrelated individuals. The research examined bull shark behavior within a marine reserve, employing genetic analysis to explore patterns of association among these apex predators.

The team investigated how bull sharks interacted in terms of swimming close together, moving in parallel, or synchronizing their movements. Their findings indicate that family relationships significantly influenced the sharks’ social choices. Other factors such as sex, age, and size also played a role, with kinship appearing to be particularly important among male sharks.

Natasha Marosi, founder of Fiji Shark Lab, described the findings as notable, given the widespread perception of large sharks as solitary creatures. “Large sharks are often seen as solitary. So to discover some of these apex predators choose to socialise with their relatives is truly exciting,” she said.

Dr. Andrew Griffiths from the University of Exeter highlighted how the study offers a different perspective on shark behavior. “This paints these animals in a completely new light,” he said, emphasizing that bull sharks demonstrate more complex social behavior than previously understood.

The research sheds new light on the social dynamics of bull sharks, challenging longstanding notions about their solitary nature and suggesting that kinship plays a pivotal role in their interactions within marine environments.
