Harborough Town progressed to the first round of the FA Cup for only the second time in their history after a 3-1 victory over National League North rivals Spennymoor Town on Saturday. The match, played at Harborough’s home ground, was settled by two late goals following an early lead.

Harborough took an early advantage in the eighth minute when Dempsey Arlott-John capitalized on a loose ball in the penalty area to score past Spennymoor goalkeeper Matt Urwin. The remainder of the first half saw a largely balanced midfield contest, with few clear chances for either side.

The next significant opportunity came early in the second half when Spennymoor’s key attacker, Riley O’Sullivan, forced a save from Urwin with a low shot to the goalkeeper’s left. However, the National League North visitors drew level in the 70th minute through Finlay Holcroft, who scored from outside the penalty area.

Harborough quickly responded with a decisive comeback. Substitute Britt Assombalonga, introduced earlier in the second half, restored the lead in the 76th minute by heading in a precise cross from defender Alex Morris at close range. Then, in the 83rd minute, birthday celebrant Eliot Putman extended the lead with a technically impressive volley into the top corner of the net.

Despite a late push from Spennymoor, Harborough maintained their composure and defensive resilience to secure the win. The result marks their second appearance in the FA Cup first round in three years, a milestone for the club under manager Mitch Austin.
