Orsen Reyes, 23, was sentenced to 12 years in state prison for a stabbing attack that took place in a Manhattan subway station in December 2024. The sentence was handed down by Judge Althea Drysdale in Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday.
Reyes, who grew up in Washington Heights, was convicted of attempted murder and other charges following an incident on the northbound C train platform in Hell’s Kitchen. Prosecutors detailed that during the assault, Reyes repeatedly stomped on the 48-year-old victim’s head and dragged him toward the train tracks. The victim’s name has not been publicly disclosed.
After the attack, Reyes reportedly left the scene and traveled to the 59th Street-Columbus Circle station, where authorities apprehended him. Photographs from the arrest show Reyes with blood on his hands and sneakers. A Manhattan jury found Reyes guilty on all counts, marking him as a first-time offender. He was held in custody pending sentencing.
The case drew significant attention due to the violent nature of the attack and its setting in a busy subway environment. The prosecution characterized the assault as brutal and unprovoked, while defense details regarding Reyes’s motive or condition at the time have not been publicly released.
Reyes’s sentencing comes amid ongoing public concern over safety in New York City’s transit system. The 12-year prison term reflects the seriousness of the charges and the unanimous jury conviction.
