Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in Muscat has announced the discovery of a previously undocumented plant species, named Adenosciadium omanensis, marking a notable addition to global botanical records. The finding was made by the Life Sciences Unit within SQU’s College of Science and highlights Oman’s unique flora.

Adenosciadium omanensis was identified on the limestone plateaus along the coastal regions, particularly within the eastern areas of the Al Hajar Mountains in northern Oman. The plant belongs to the Apiaceae family, a grouping that includes several well-known herbaceous species. It bears some resemblance to Adenosciadium arabicum, which is native to southern Oman and extends into Yemen; however, Adenosciadium omanensis exhibits distinct features that reflect adaptation to its specific climatic and environmental conditions.

Key distinguishing characteristics include leaves with a velvety texture and leaflets possessing serrated edges shaped like kidneys. Additionally, the species has a greater number of flowers, with seed shape and size also differing significantly from its relative species. These traits suggest evolutionary divergence driven by the varied terrain and environment of its habitat.

The discovery underwent formal scientific validation and was published in the Edinburgh Scientific Journal of Botany, confirming Adenosciadium omanensis as an internationally recognized species. At present, the plant does not have a locally known name, nor are there any documented uses or traditional applications. Researchers at SQU have indicated that further studies are necessary to explore the plant’s chemical composition and assess any potential medicinal or ecological value.

This identification contributes to the broader understanding of Oman’s biodiversity and underscores the importance of continued botanical exploration in the region.
