Three Sumatran tiger cubs born at a zoo near Athens offer a rare note of optimism for one of the world’s most endangered big cats. The two-month-old cubs recently received their first vaccinations and identification microchips as part of a coordinated international effort to establish a secure captive population.

The Sumatran tiger, native exclusively to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, is classified as critically endangered. Experts estimate that fewer than 400 individuals remain in the wild, primarily due to widespread deforestation and habitat loss. The species is among the most threatened tiger subspecies worldwide, alongside the South China tiger and the Malayan tiger.

“These tigers face severe challenges in the wild, so maintaining a backup population in zoos is crucial to potential future reintroduction programs,” said Theodoros Babilis, head keeper of cats and monkeys at Attica Zoological Park.

Males of the species can reach up to 8.4 feet in length and weigh as much as 300 pounds. Despite their relatively small size compared to other tiger species, Sumatran tigers are adept swimmers and climbers. Their distinctive dark stripes, unique to each animal, provide camouflage in dense forest environments where they prey on deer, wild pigs, and smaller mammals.

The cubs, two males and one female, were born in early July to mother Toba. Their father, Argos, passed away from cancer earlier this year. Zoo staff have indicated that the cubs are expected to be named after characters from Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey.”

Veterinary care for the young tigers is complex due to their natural wariness and sharp claws and teeth, even at a young age. During their recent health check, staff used electric buggies to transport the restless cubs in carriers to minimize stress and ensure the vaccinations were administered quickly and safely.

Dr. Arsenoi Psaroudaki, a zoo and wildlife veterinarian involved in the cubs’ care, emphasized the importance of these efforts. “The tigers don’t like to be handled; they’re very wild,” she said. “But providing vaccinations and microchips is essential for their health and for tracking them within an international database.”

The vaccinations administered protect the cubs from three diseases common in feline species. Psaroudaki described her work as both challenging and rewarding, underscoring the critical role of captive breeding in conserving this rare and vulnerable tiger subspecies.
