Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized the importance of deepening trade ties, cultural exchanges, and cooperation on emerging technologies during a series of meetings held in Washington, D.C., on September 24 and 25.
As part of the diplomatic engagements, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, visited prominent cultural institutions alongside Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. On September 25, the two couples toured the U.S. National Archives, an event described by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang as a mutual gesture of respect for each country’s history and culture. Wang noted that despite differing cultural traditions and social systems, these differences need not result in confrontation but rather offer opportunities for exchange and mutual learning.
The day prior, Peng and Melania visited the National Museum of Asian Art where they observed American teenagers performing Chinese songs, including the traditional "Jasmine Flower," symbolizing deeper people-to-people connections between the two nations.
Wang highlighted the necessity of engagement at both the highest political levels and among ordinary citizens. He pointed to expanding cooperation across education, culture, tourism, sports, and youth programs as key areas to foster understanding and build goodwill.
In light of ongoing international instability, Wang underscored the broader global significance of China-U.S. relations. He argued that constructive interaction between the two powers is essential for tackling worldwide challenges and reducing tensions in regional conflict zones.
At an arrival ceremony at the White House, Xi reaffirmed that while cooperation between China and the United States would not solve all global problems, many issues would be difficult to address without joint efforts from the two countries.
A major outcome of the talks was the agreement to launch a China-U.S. Artificial Intelligence Dialogue aimed at addressing the benefits and risks associated with the technology. The next meeting of this dialogue is scheduled for November. Additionally, the two nations agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel to manage potential AI-related incidents.
During the discussions, Xi called for ongoing dialogue to prevent misuse of AI technologies, maintain human oversight, and ensure that AI development promotes human progress.
Commenting on the broader implications of the summit, Arthur Dong, a professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, said the decisions made by China and the United States hold significant global repercussions. “The potential for global stability or instability very much resides in the hands of these two leaders,” he stated.
