The Meteorology Department of Sri Lanka has forecast showers and thundershowers in several regions across the country on September 6. After 2 p.m., rainfall is expected in parts of the Uva, Central, and Eastern Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaitivu Districts. Some areas within the Uva and Eastern Provinces may experience fairly heavy showers exceeding 50 millimeters.

In addition, light rain is anticipated intermittently in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, along with the Galle and Matara Districts. Coastal areas are also expected to see precipitation, with showers likely over sea areas stretching from Chilaw to Matara, including the coastline near Colombo and Galle. During the evening or night, showers or thundershowers may occur along coastal zones extending from Mullaitivu to Pottuvil, as well as off the coasts near Trincomalee and Batticaloa.

The department notes that the sun is directly overhead near Sri Lanka at latitudes close to the island from August 28 through September 7. On September 6, the sun will be overhead at specifically identified locations—Bentota, Thiniyawalla, Ittakanda, Udawalawe, and Kataragama—at approximately 12:08 p.m.

Winds blowing across the island are expected to come predominantly from the southwest, with speeds generally ranging between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour. However, wind speeds at sea may occasionally increase to as high as 55 kilometers per hour in coastal areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kankesanthurai to Puttalam through Mannar.

Seas are forecast to be fairly rough in these regions. The Meteorology Department has also issued a caution that strong temporary winds could occur during thundershower activity, potentially causing the sea state to worsen and become very rough, particularly in the identified offshore waters. Mariners and coastal communities have been advised to remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.
