Australian actor Milly Alcock discussed her portrayal of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El in the upcoming DC Studios film during a fan event in London on Thursday, highlighting the character’s complex and grounded nature. Alcock described her role as a “reluctant hero” and a “rebel” who carries a sense of humility, suggesting that audiences will encounter a more humanized and relatable superhero on screen.
At 26, Alcock, known for her work on House of the Dragon and Sirens, noted that this marks her feature film debut. She described the experience as both empowering and emotionally intense, encompassing a wide range of feelings from confidence to self-doubt. “It’s my first film, so it’s kind of been the biggest thing ever in the world,” she said, reflecting on the personal significance of taking on such a prominent lead role in a summer blockbuster.
The film is adapted from the 2021-22 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and is directed by Craig Gillespie, whose previous credits include It, Tonya and Cruella. Gillespie emphasized that his approach to the movie was influenced by the source material’s raw and authentic portrayal of its protagonist. He pointed out that unlike traditional female superheroes often placed on pedestals, Supergirl is depicted with flaws and trauma, navigating personal struggles that make her more relatable to viewers.
“Particularly for a female superhero, she wasn’t on this pedestal. She was flawed. She was going through trauma. She had issues she was trying to figure out,” Gillespie said. “To see that and have it be something that you can actually relate to, a person that you can recognize in yourself, I was really excited to be able to do it in this kind of film.”
Joining Alcock at the event was Jason Momoa, who takes on the role of Lobo, a character from his childhood comics. Momoa described securing this part as a significant personal achievement and noted that Lobo adds “a little bit of spice” to the film, suggesting that his inclusion brings a distinctive energy to the story.
The film is scheduled to premiere in Israel later this week, marking the latest addition to the expanding DC Studios cinematic universe.
