A recent clinical trial suggests that a dietary supplement may offer relief for individuals suffering from moderate-to-severe irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea (IBS-D). The study, conducted by the Functional Gut Clinic, involved 78 adults diagnosed with IBS-D and aimed to assess the effectiveness of the AltruVita Healthy Gut supplement in alleviating symptoms.
IBS affects approximately one in five adults, with symptoms including bloating, gas, stomach cramps, constipation, and diarrhoea. IBS-D, characterized primarily by frequent and urgent diarrhoea, accounts for an estimated 25 to 42 percent of all IBS cases and is known to cause significant anxiety due to its unpredictable nature. Research published in BMC Medicine has highlighted multiple factors that may contribute to IBS development, including diet, genetics, psychological elements, environmental influences, and imbalances in the gut microbiome.
In this randomized trial, participants were divided into two groups for the first four weeks: one received the AltruVita supplement daily, while the other was given a placebo. The supplement contains curcumin, which is believed to aid fat digestion and reduce inflammation; green tea polyphenols, known for their anti-inflammatory properties and potential to protect the stomach lining; and Vitamin D3, which supports immune function.
After four weeks, individuals taking the supplement showed clinically meaningful improvements in IBS-D symptoms, whereas those in the placebo group did not demonstrate similar benefits. In the subsequent four weeks, all participants received the supplement, and during this period, both groups reported symptom reductions.
The trial's results were presented at the British Gastroenterology Conference, BSG Live 26, last month. While further research may be necessary to fully establish the supplement’s long-term efficacy, these findings offer promising prospects for managing IBS-D symptoms through dietary intervention.
AltruVita Healthy Gut is available over the counter and is priced at £24.95 for a 60-capsule supply.
