The Supreme Court has issued directives requiring hotels, shops, and other establishments to display signboards prominently in Marathi using the Devanagari script. Despite this ruling, several businesses have not complied, prompting the Shiv Sena party to grant a one-month deadline for adherence to the mandate.
In some areas, signboards are displayed not only in English but also in Urdu, which Shiv Sena has addressed by stating that if signboards exist in English or Urdu, they must also be presented in Marathi. The party has warned that failure to comply will result in legal action initiated by the municipal corporation. Should establishments continue to ignore the directive thereafter, Shiv Sena has indicated it will take enforcement measures independently.
This issue was discussed in a special meeting of the legislative committee held on Wednesday at the municipal corporation headquarters. The meeting was chaired by legislative committee head Dikshkar Karkar and attended by Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi, committee members, municipal commissioners, and officers from the shops and establishments department.
Following the meeting, officials held a press conference to provide updates on the implementation status of Marathi signboards in the city. The efforts reflect ongoing tensions over language use in public spaces and the mandate aims to ensure Marathi language prominence in line with legal and cultural expectations.
