Suri Noelle, the 20-year-old daughter of actor Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, is making her debut on the stage at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this month, performing in a Shakespeare adaptation. Notably, she has adopted her middle name, Noelle, as her surname, distancing herself from her father’s last name.

Unlike Cruise’s other children, Isabella and Connor—whom he adopted during his marriage to Nicole Kidman—Suri appears to have limited or no contact with her father. Reports suggest that Cruise and Suri have been estranged for over a decade, with the two last publicly seen together in 2012 at Disney World in Florida. The apparent rift is believed to be connected, at least in part, to Cruise’s involvement with the Church of Scientology, of which he is a prominent member.

Holmes’ split from Cruise in 2012 was reportedly influenced by concerns over Suri’s potential exposure to Scientology. During divorce proceedings the following year, Cruise acknowledged in a deposition that Holmes sought the separation partly to protect their daughter from the religion. The Church of Scientology’s doctrine includes designations such as “suppressive person” (SP), which can lead devoted members to sever ties with those labeled as such, even within families. It has been speculated that Holmes may have been branded an SP after the split, which could explain Cruise’s distance from Suri.

This estrangement contrasts with Cruise’s relationship with his older children. Isabella, 33, and Connor, 31, have reportedly maintained closer ties to their father and the Church of Scientology. Both were raised within the organization after being adopted by Cruise during his marriage to Kidman, with Isabella noted as a particularly devoted follower. Connor currently lives near Scientology’s headquarters in Clearwater, Florida.

Suri’s name change marks a significant personal decision and may signal a desire to address her relationship with her father more openly in the future. When she was introduced to the public as a baby on the cover of Vanity Fair, Cruise had spoken warmly about fatherhood, expressing his commitment to being a dependable parent. However, no public statements have been made by Suri regarding her family circumstances since.
