A 37-year-old man was arrested on Sunday on hate crime charges after allegedly assaulting a 12-year-old boy in a Manhattan playground last month, according to police. Kevin Maxwell, from Canarsie, Brooklyn, faces charges including assault and menacing, both classified as hate crimes, as well as acting in a manner injurious to a child.
Authorities reported that the incident took place shortly after midnight on April 29 near the public restroom at Baruch Playground, located near Baruch Drive and East Houston Street on the Lower East Side. Maxwell reportedly confronted the boy, who is not known to him, and directed anti-gay slurs at him before striking him with a belt. Police said the suspect yelled, “Are you stupid or something? You gay f—-t,” during the encounter.
The boy sustained minor injuries in the incident. Following the assault, police released a sketch of the suspect and sought public assistance in identifying him. Maxwell was subsequently taken into custody and is scheduled to appear for arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court.
