Polish authorities have detained a suspect in connection with an alleged planned attack targeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski announced Sunday. The suspect was apprehended in the Lower Silesia region, according to Jacek Dobrzynski, spokesman for Poland’s coordinator of intelligence services.

The alert arose after security services received information suggesting an imminent threat not only to Tusk but also to Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. The State Protection Service (SOP), responsible for government and presidential security, initially obtained the intelligence via an email. The information was subsequently passed to law enforcement officials for investigation.

Officials described the threat assessment as serious. Dobrzynski told the PAP news agency that authorities regarded the likelihood of the attack being carried out as “very high,” prompting an immediate crisis meeting. Government spokesman Adam Szlapka said Tusk was informed early Sunday and continued his duties as usual. Szlapka also noted the warning was more concerning compared to previous intelligence reports.

Poland is a strategic member of both the European Union and the NATO alliance, maintaining close ties with Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. The heightened alert underscores the government’s concern over internal security risks amid geopolitical tensions.

According to Polish media accounts, the email sender was not believed to be the would-be attacker but was reportedly aware of the plot details. Additional reports indicated that the informant had engaged via social media with a radical group seeking volunteers for an armed assault. The informant later met with a man named Krzysztof, whose discussions involved weapons, hostility toward the government, and plans for mass violence.

Prime Minister Tusk publicly thanked security services on social media for their rapid response to the threat. Law enforcement continues to investigate the scope of the plot and any possible accomplices as authorities work to ensure the safety of government officials.
