A Ukrainian national has been detained in the German state of Brandenburg on suspicion of espionage for Russia, according to a statement from federal public prosecutors. The suspect, identified only as Vadym Y in compliance with German privacy laws, allegedly maintained contact with a Russian intelligence service through an intermediary beginning at least in July 2025.

Prosecutors state that Vadym Y collected military-related information pertaining to the production of armored vehicles, ammunition, explosives, and personnel as well as facilities involved in securing NATO’s eastern flank. While some of the gathered data was publicly accessible, other details were reportedly solicited from individuals within the European defense industry.

This arrest comes amid heightened German efforts to counter what officials describe as increasing hybrid attacks from Moscow, which Chancellor Friedrich Merz characterized as the most significant threat to the country’s security. Merz indicated that the apprehension did not come as a surprise and predicted further similar cases in the future.

Western officials have long warned about Russian attempts to conduct sabotage, cyberattacks, and other hybrid operations across Europe aimed at undermining support for Ukraine. Merz underscored the severity of Russian disinformation campaigns and hybrid tactics during a recent address, stating that these efforts constitute the greatest security threat to Germany and represent a broader challenge to the post–Cold War political order.

The suspect is scheduled to appear before an investigating judge at Germany’s Federal Court of Justice, where authorities will formally present the arrest warrant and decide whether Vadym Y will remain in pre-trial detention. The Russian embassy in Berlin had not responded to requests for comment at the time of the announcement.
