Sutton United manager Chris Agutter has expressed confidence in the team’s promotion prospects following an unbeaten start to the 2026-27 season. The club has won its first four league matches, including notable victories over Hartlepool United and Gateshead.

Agutter, who previously managed Hastings United and Worthing, emphasized the importance of setting clear ambitions early. “We’ve laid our cards on the table,” he said, highlighting that the team’s recruitment and messaging to players reflect their goal of challenging for promotion. He acknowledged the pressures managers face in the modern game, noting that results are immediately scrutinized even at the highest levels of football.

Reflecting on last season’s struggles, where he took charge amid a relegation battle and led the club away from the bottom four, Agutter said the experience was “brutal” and fueled decisions made during the summer transfer window. Sutton United's squad was strengthened with key additions such as centre-back Will Nightingale and striker Temi Babalola, players Agutter believes have added resilience and quality.

Agutter also praised the leadership within the squad, particularly newly appointed captain Jake Taylor. He noted that senior players like Taylor, Nightingale, and Osadebe have taken responsibility for maintaining team standards and mentality, allowing the manager to rely less on direct motivational talks before matches.

“We haven’t encountered serious pressure yet, but we have the right characters to stand up when it comes,” Agutter said. He expressed satisfaction with the club’s current trajectory and the backing received from the board, reinforcing his belief that a strong start can set the right tone for a successful campaign.
