Sutton United extended their winning run to four matches with a 1-0 victory over Gateshead at Tyneside on Saturday, despite being reduced to ten men shortly before the hour mark. The result propelled Sutton to the top of the table as they maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

The turning point came when Sutton midfielder Noah Nzuzi was sent off for head-butting Gateshead defender Kyle Ferguson near the halfway line. Despite playing the final 30 minutes a man down, Sutton showed resilience and composure to see out the game.

The decisive goal arrived in the 81st minute, when striker Temi Babalola rose above the defense to head home from close range following a cross from Emanuel Osadebe. The goal proved to be the difference as Sutton’s defense held firm, having conceded only once all season.

Sutton manager Chris Agutter praised his team’s mental strength and character in overcoming the challenge of playing with a numerical disadvantage. “We dealt with going down to ten men really well,” Agutter said. He emphasized the importance of having the right players and mindset, adding, “The mentality and the character of the group, that’s all them, and it’s been a great start to the season.”

Gateshead, seeking to bounce back from a subdued performance and loss at Yeovil last week, displayed greater intensity and tempo but struggled to convert their chances. The hosts had clear opportunities in both halves but were unable to find the net against a disciplined Sutton defense.

Gateshead had a notable chance early on when David Eguaibor turned defender Kirk inside the penalty area but shot over the bar. Near the end of the match, Billy Chadwick came close to equalizing, a miss that left Gateshead manager Lee Cattermole frustrated but hopeful. “I’m absolutely gutted for the players,” Cattermole said. “We played well and for large parts of the game nullified a strong Sutton side. Execution of the game plan was outstanding. We know the direction we want to go in, and that was a big step forward.”

The result leaves Sutton United atop the league standings, having won all four of their opening fixtures, while Gateshead continue their search for their first points of the campaign.
