A long-term Sutton United supporter has responded to recent criticism regarding the club’s ownership and management following its relegation from the English Football League (EFL). Mark Bravery, who has followed Sutton United for nearly four decades, addressed comments made in a recent letter that compared the club unfavorably to other teams with foreign ownership.
Sutton United, which gained promotion to the EFL in 2021, has been majority-owned by US investors since that time. Bravery acknowledged the change in ownership but rejected comparisons to other clubs such as Wrexham, describing such parallels as "pretty ludicrous." He emphasized the challenges the club faced when stepping up to professional football, noting that rapid professionalisation required significant financial investment. Without this backing, Bravery suggested, the club might not have been able to secure promotion in the first place.
After two seasons in the EFL, Sutton United was relegated and has since returned to Non-League football, resulting in a substantial decrease in income. Despite these financial constraints, the club has continued to make gradual improvements to its stadium and infrastructure. Attendances at home matches have declined since relegation, but Bravery highlighted that current crowd numbers remain about three times higher than those seen 15 to 20 years ago.
Bravery’s comments provide a perspective rooted in long-term support for the club, offering insight into the complexities of maintaining competitive football status amid shifting financial and operational realities. The debate over club ownership models continues to provoke discussion among supporters of lower-league teams seeking stability and success.
