A woman discovered a swastika carved into the hood of her Tesla parked on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, in an incident suspected to be motivated by hate. The vehicle, which had an Israeli flag visible in the back seat, was parked near East 85th Street and First Avenue around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and the damage was found by the owner the following Friday morning. Law enforcement officials are investigating the case as a potential antisemitic hate crime, though no arrests have been made.
The incident follows a series of antisemitic vandalism cases in New York City, including a recent spree in Queens where swastikas and hateful slogans were spray-painted on religious institutions, residences, and vehicles. One notable site affected was Congregation Machane Chodosh in Rego Park, which had a swastika defaced on a plaque commemorating survivors of Kristallnacht, a violent pogrom against Jews in Nazi Germany.
City officials have condemned the attack and emphasized the need to address the rising trend of hate crimes. Mayor Mamdani described the defacement as a "despicable act of antisemitism" and called it an attack on the city’s Jewish community and foundational values. City Council Speaker Julie Menin highlighted the recurring appearance of such symbols in her district, expressing concern about the ongoing prevalence of hate crimes.
The New York Police Department reports that hate crimes have increased across the city in recent months. As of May 31, there have been 265 reported hate crime incidents in 2026, a nearly 9% increase compared to 244 incidents during the same period last year. Of these, 152 cases targeted Jewish individuals or were classified as antisemitic. In May alone, hate crimes surged by 74.4%, rising from 39 to 68 incidents compared to May of the previous year, with more than 60% linked to anti-Jewish sentiment.
Authorities continue to investigate the swastika vandalism on the Upper East Side and urge the public to report any related incidents as the city confronts an uptick in targeted hate crimes.
