At 17 years old, Catherine (a pseudonym) continues to face significant health challenges linked to early childhood obesity and a persistent preference for sugary foods. Her case underscores growing concerns about the rising incidence of Type 2 diabetes risk among adolescents.

When Catherine was six, she weighed just 22 kilograms. However, by age 10, her weight had tripled, despite her height being just 130 centimeters. By 15, she measured 155 centimeters and weighed nearly 100 kilograms. Along with the weight gain, her parents noticed darkened patches on her skin, prompting medical evaluation.

Blood tests revealed that Catherine was at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Although her fasting blood glucose reading was 5.1 mmol/L—below the 6.0 mmol/L threshold for diabetes diagnosis—her glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level was 6.1%, placing her in the pre-diabetic category. HbA1c measures average blood glucose levels over several months and is commonly used to assess diabetes risk.

The family doctor, who had been monitoring her weight since earlier years, expressed concern over the results. Additional tests showed elevated inflammation markers, and Catherine was diagnosed with acanthosis nigricans, a skin condition often linked to obesity and insulin resistance. The doctor warned that without intervention, Catherine’s risk of progressing to full diabetes was significant.
