Ruth Hitchcock marked a personal milestone by completing her 1,000th daily swim at Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth, Cornwall, as part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness and funds for neuroendocrine cancer research. Since October 2023, Hitchcock has entered the sea every day to support her husband, Dave, who has been living with the disease since 2009.
The daily swims have not only drawn attention to the rare form of cancer but have also contributed to raising approximately £65,000 for related research. Hitchcock acknowledged the physical challenges posed by her routine, noting that she has encountered both dangerous conditions and particularly cold waters during her swims.
Her commitment highlights the role personal advocacy can play in supporting cancer research and patient communities. The £65,000 raised through her efforts aims to contribute to ongoing studies seeking better understanding and treatment of neuroendocrine cancer, a condition that often goes underrecognized due to its rarity.
By maintaining this rigorous daily schedule at Gyllyngvase Beach, Hitchcock combines personal motivation with broader public health aims, drawing attention to the impact of cancer on patients and their families.
