Jacob Johnson, a correspondent for Sydney-based 1News Australia, has announced his engagement to Jessica Morris, a producer at TVNZ+. The couple became engaged during a holiday in Japan, where Johnson, 27, proposed to Morris, 30, in a unique and carefully planned manner.
The trip, which the couple had been discussing for several years, lasted eight days and included stops in Tokyo, Hakone, and Kyoto. Johnson chose this setting as the ideal moment for his proposal. To keep the engagement ring concealed, he taped it to the back of an electrolyte drink bottle, frequently purchased due to the humid weather. Johnson then handed the bottle to Morris while they rested under a tree in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.
Morris had some suspicion that a proposal might occur during their trip but was still surprised by the gesture. The pair had spent the previous night out bar-hopping, and despite Morris asking Johnson not to propose the next morning since she was not wearing makeup, Johnson went ahead with his plan. After initially composing herself and accepting the proposal, Morris recalled asking where he had acquired the tape used to hide the ring.
Following the proposal, Johnson had arranged a surprise stay at a hotel for the couple. They relaxed by watching the film "The Proposal" and enjoying snacks bought at a local convenience store. The remainder of their holiday was marked by excitement and joy over the engagement.
The couple stated their wedding plans remain some time away. They are considering a small, intimate ceremony with immediate family members, tentatively scheduled for late 2028, though the venue has yet to be determined.
Johnson expressed admiration for Morris’s sense of humor and passion for life, describing her as caring and someone with whom he can share anything. Morris, in turn, praised Johnson’s spontaneity and enthusiasm, calling him a supportive and positive travel partner.
Their engagement reflects a shared love of adventure and a deep personal connection as they look forward to their future together.
