Synopsys, a leading provider of software for semiconductor design, has entered into a partnership with OpenAI to develop an artificial intelligence model tailored for chip design, aiming to significantly accelerate the engineering process. The new AI model, named GPT-Synopsys, is intended to assist engineers in optimizing circuit layouts, potentially reducing design cycles by weeks or even months.

The collaboration combines Synopsys’s expertise in semiconductor technology with OpenAI’s advancements in artificial intelligence. According to OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, the model is designed to navigate complex design trade-offs, enhancing the efficiency of engineering workflows without replacing essential verification steps. These traditional quality assurance measures will remain part of the process to ensure the reliability and functionality of the chips produced.

Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi expressed optimism about the partnership's impact on the company’s financial outlook, projecting a revenue increase of around 15 percent for fiscal year 2027, surpassing market expectations. The companies have agreed on a financial arrangement in which OpenAI will pay Synopsys a training subscription fee, with additional revenue sharing tied to the AI model’s performance and effectiveness in semiconductor design tasks.

The deal underscores the growing role of AI in hardware engineering, reflecting a broader industry trend toward integrating advanced computational tools to improve design efficiency and product innovation. By leveraging GPT-Synopsys, chipmakers may be able to bring new products to market faster, addressing increasing demand for advanced semiconductors across various technology sectors.
