Tadej Pogacar, the Slovenian cyclist widely regarded as one of the best in the world, was forced to withdraw from the Vuelta a Espana on August 29 after a severe crash during stage eight. The 27-year-old suffered multiple injuries, including a broken collarbone, a concussion, a stable neck fracture, and cuts, according to his team doctor. Pogacar's shoulder injury is expected to require surgery.

The incident occurred with approximately 31 to 32 kilometers remaining in a flat stage near Xeraco, close to Valencia. Pogacar, racing in the middle of the peloton, collided with another rider after bumping shoulders and lost control of his bike. Initially, he appeared to consider continuing but soon showed signs of pain and distress, vocalizing "No" before sitting down for treatment. He was subsequently transported by ambulance with his arm in a sling.

Prior to the crash, Pogacar had been leading the race by three minutes and 50 seconds over Spanish rider Enric Mas of Movistar, who now assumes the race lead in the general classification. Pogacar had demonstrated strong form with three stage victories within the first six days of the race and had been targeting a clean sweep of the three Grand Tours, with the Vuelta as the only major race missing from his record.

The crash raises questions about Pogacar’s ability to compete in the upcoming Road Cycling World Championships scheduled for next month. This marks the first time that Pogacar has abandoned a Grand Tour, as well as his first major injury since breaking his wrist at the 2023 Liège–Bastogne–Liège race.

French cyclist Bryan Coquard of the Cofidis team won the 171-kilometer stage, while Movistar’s Enric Mas, 31, now leads the overall standings. Coquard expressed sympathy for Pogacar’s misfortune but noted that many key races remain in the season.

The Vuelta a Espana is set to conclude on September 13 in Granada, with competitors now adjusting to the absence of one of cycling’s top contenders. Pogacar’s team, UAE Team Emirates-XRG, will have to recalibrate their strategy as the race progresses without their talismanic leader.
