Tadley Calleva’s FA Cup run came to an end after a 2-0 defeat to Aldershot Town in the fourth qualifying round replay on Tuesday night at Barlow’s Park. Despite the loss, the Step 5 club earned widespread praise for their performance and the support of their fans, who turned out in record numbers for the first sell-out crowd of 1,000 at the ground.
Manager Joe Lawler expressed pride in his team’s efforts throughout the competition, which began for Tadley at the extra preliminary round stage. Although disappointed by the two goals conceded in the replay, Lawler highlighted the significance of the club’s cup journey and the positive impact it could have on their season. “We were absolutely superb,” he said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the fans; they came out in their numbers again. We had some incredible moments, and hopefully, these fans will remember them for a long time. Aldershot away is something I’ll never forget. It’s unbelievable that we were even in the first-round draw.”
Tadley currently sit fourth in the Combined Counties League Premier South table, with up to six games in hand on some of their rivals. Looking ahead, Lawler emphasized the importance of building on the momentum gained from the cup run to push for continued league success. “The FA Cup has been great, what an occasion for the club. Now it’s for us to really hammer that home in the league form. We have to say, ‘this is how good we can be, let’s continue to grow from there’,” he said. “We’ve got two options. We can either say we had a great season or we can continue making more moments. I hope that we use this as a springboard to go on to a good run. I think we can. We showed that we can handle big games, big teams, and I hope the boys continue to show that.”
Aldershot Town manager Scott Davies also praised Tadley’s performance, reflecting on the closely matched contest over both legs. “Even though we’ve won, I still think Tadley are the winners,” Davies said. “Over the two games, we didn’t look four leagues apart. It’s a shame that both teams can’t go through – I’d love to see Tadley play Barnsley.”
While Tadley’s FA Cup campaign ended sooner than hoped, their spirited display has drawn respect within non-league circles and raised optimism about the club’s prospects in the remainder of the season.
