Teddy Wilson, the 23-year-old scrumhalf from the New South Wales Waratahs, is poised to join the Wallabies’ Nations Championship touring squad for the upcoming northern hemisphere tour. The call-up follows the expected absence of Tate McDermott, who will reportedly miss the tour due to the impending birth of his child.
Wilson, who recently signed a one-year contract extension with the Waratahs, is set to compete for a place behind first-choice halfback Ryan Lonergan and back-up Kalani Thomas. The squad announcement, including the 36-man roster, is anticipated from Wallabies coach Les Kiss on Friday.
Alongside Wilson’s inclusion, utility player Jock Campbell, a regular in this year’s squad, will also be unavailable for the four-game tour. Additionally, NRL convert Angus Crichton, who had been considered for immediate selection, will miss out due to a foot injury. Crichton is being managed carefully with a view to returning for the Waratahs in the Super Rugby Pacific season under new head coach Michael Cheika.
The Wallabies’ November tour features matches against England, Scotland, and Wales, followed by the Nations Championship finals weekend at Twickenham from November 27 to 29. Australia’s final opponent will depend on their standing in the southern hemisphere table; they will face the team finishing in the corresponding position in the northern hemisphere table during the finals.
This tour is viewed as a pivotal opportunity for the squad’s development ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which will be hosted by Australia. The inclusion of emerging talents like Wilson underscores the team’s focus on building depth and experience in key positions.
In related news, the Waratahs have confirmed the return of experienced halves Nick Phipps and Bernard Foley for the 2027 season. While Phipps is expected to adopt a mentoring role, Foley remains committed to challenging for selection at the World Cup.
