The Moon, Earth’s only natural satellite, ranks as the fifth largest among the 135 confirmed moons in the solar system. Measuring approximately 2,160 miles in diameter, it is estimated to be over four billion years old. At about one-quarter the size of Earth, the Moon's gravitational influence drives the cyclical rise and fall of our oceans and even affects terrestrial tides.

Orbiting Earth at an average distance of roughly 230,000 miles, the Moon has the distinction of being the only extraterrestrial body visited by humans. The first successful human landing occurred on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong set foot on its surface. Earlier, the Soviet Luna 2 probe made history as the first man-made object to reach the lunar surface. Additionally, reflective mirrors left by Apollo mission astronauts allow scientists to measure the Earth-Moon distance with remarkable precision—accurate within half an inch.

Despite its familiar presence, the Moon has no proper name beyond the simple designation "Moon," making it unique among all other moons in the solar system. It has no atmosphere, rendering its sky permanently black, even during the lunar day. Surface temperatures take extreme swings, averaging around 220°F during the day but plunging to as low as minus 300°F at night. The Moon's gravity is just one-sixth that of Earth's, meaning a person weighing 100 pounds on Earth would weigh only about 17 pounds on the lunar surface.

Although it appears bright in the night sky, the Moon’s surface is actually quite dark, reflecting only about 10% of sunlight due to its charcoal-like composition. Its prominence arises mainly from its closeness to Earth and its position opposite the Sun.

The Moon’s origin remains the subject of scientific debate. Leading theories propose it formed either from a massive collision between Earth and a Mars-sized body or was a captured asteroid, but no consensus has been reached.

The lunar rotation is synchronized with its orbit around Earth, causing the same hemisphere to constantly face our planet. This synchronous rotation is why the far side of the Moon remains out of view from Earth, though it is incorrect to refer to the "dark side" as some suggest, since all sides receive sunlight at different times.

Other planets in the solar system host numerous moons, though most are considerably smaller. Jupiter’s Ganymede stands as the largest moon overall, exceeding 3,000 miles in diameter, larger than the planet Mercury. Jupiter has more than 45 small moons and a total of 101 confirmed moons, while Saturn holds the record for the most confirmed moons at 293. Interest in moons like Europa, which is covered by a thick ice shell and may harbor the conditions necessary for life, continues to grow among scientists.

Unlike Earth, the Moon’s surface retains craters unchanged for millions of years due to the absence of atmospheric erosion agents such as wind and rain. These enduring features offer valuable insights into the solar system’s history.
