A piglet named Tom has defied the odds after being found injured and abandoned on a trailer destined for slaughter. Rescued by Carole Webb, an 82-year-old retired veterinary nurse and founder of the Farm Animal Rescue Sanctuary in Stratford-upon-Avon, Tom has since thrived under her care.

Tom, a Large White pig, was discovered at the roadside with his umbilical cord still attached. It is believed that his mother gave birth on the trailer but that Tom fell through the slats before the vehicle reached its destination. A passer-by found the vulnerable piglet and brought him to the sanctuary, where Webb and her team provided the necessary nursing care.

Initially small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, Tom has grown significantly over the course of six months. Webb described him as a sociable and engaging animal who exhibits behavior more typical of a domestic pet. He has formed close bonds with a variety of animals at the sanctuary, including chickens and cats, and enjoys playing with plush toys specially provided for him.

“Tom is really just like a real-life Babe,” Webb said, referring to the popular film about a pig. She added that he responds to his name, follows her around, and enjoys belly rubs, highlighting his distinctive and affectionate personality.

Webb’s sanctuary currently cares for around 350 animals, and Tom has become a favorite among the residents and staff. His recovery and spirited demeanor stand in contrast to his grim beginnings and underscore the sanctuary’s role in rescuing animals facing uncertain futures.
