Tasweer, Qatar’s leading photography platform, is set to inaugurate a new exhibition entitled “As the Image Unfolds – The Language of Athar” on October 26 at Bayt Al Wakrah. The show presents original photographic works by Mohammed Fakhroo, Ghada al-Mawlawi, and Raja Arderod, developed throughout their participation in the five-month Tasweer Residency program titled As the Image Unfolds.
The exhibition takes its name from the Arabic word "athar," meaning traces or imprints, and investigates how photography serves both to document and reinterpret experiences by drawing on personal, cultural, and visual residues. On display until December 15, the exhibition showcases three distinctive projects reflecting this theme: al-Mawlawi’s *Portals of Belonging*, Fakhroo’s *For Sale*, and Arderod’s *Signs Seen, Yet Unseen*.
Khalifa al-Obaidly, director of Tasweer, emphasized the significance of photography in preserving the traces of people, places, and moments beyond their immediate occurrence. He noted that through research, experimentation, and dialogue fostered in the residency, the participating artists have cultivated unique visual languages. “The Language of Athar allows audiences to see where that process has taken them, and how photography can connect memory with the way we understand the world around us today,” al-Obaidly said.
The residency offered a combination of mentorship, critique, and intensive studio work, allowing the photographers to explore and expand their artistic practices. Besides al-Obaidly, mentorship was provided by artists Ghayan al-Aminé and Maria Ovsyannikova, the latter of whom also curated the exhibition.
As part of the broader Qatar Creates 2026/2027 season, the event contributes to a vibrant period in Qatar’s cultural calendar, featuring activities across art, design, photography, heritage, and other creative disciplines.
The exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free, with advance tickets required via the Tasweer website. The public opening reception will be held on October 26 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bayt Al Wakrah.
