Former Liverpool footballer Jamie Carragher has avoided bankruptcy after reaching a settlement over an unpaid tax bill with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The bankruptcy petition, which was filed in August, was dismissed this week at the Insolvency and Companies Court.

While no specific amount was disclosed in court, previous reports estimated the outstanding tax liability to be between £700,000 and £800,000. Carragher, 48, who spent his entire professional career at Liverpool and was part of the team that won the 2005 UEFA Champions League, has since transitioned to a media career. He currently works as a football pundit for Sky Sports in the UK and CBS Sports in the United States.

A spokesperson for Carragher described the issue as a private tax matter, stating that it should have been resolved earlier and confirming that necessary actions were being taken to address it. The court’s dismissal means Carragher will not face formal bankruptcy proceedings linked to the tax dispute.
