In response to rising temperatures and shifting climate conditions, several farmers across England are experimenting with growing crops traditionally associated with warmer regions, including tea, melons, grapes, and other fruits. This trend reflects both the challenges and new opportunities emerging in British agriculture as climate change alters the landscape of viable cultivation.
Mark Wyatt, a farmer in Sussex, initiated the commercial cultivation of tea on his 100-acre farm in 2022, marking the first year of harvesting and processing from approximately 8,500 tea bushes. The crop, Camellia sinensis, has rarely been grown outdoors in the UK despite the country's longstanding tea-drinking culture. Wyatt attributes the viability of tea farming in Sussex to rising temperatures and a unique microclimate that traps moisture, creating conditions reminiscent of traditional tea-growing regions like Sri Lanka.
Wyatt plans to expand his plantation to 30,000 bushes over the next three years with the goal of producing around a ton of tea annually. However, he acknowledges the venture's difficulties, including the need for irrigation during dry spells and extreme heat in greenhouses, which once reached 56 degrees Celsius (133 Fahrenheit). He regards the project as a long-term gamble, with profitability potentially more than a decade away. His tea, sold under the Banks single estate label, is positioned as a luxury product and commands a significantly higher price than conventional commercial teas.
Further north in Cambridgeshire, farmer Anthony Davison is diversifying his farm’s output by cultivating melons and experimenting with peaches and nectarines. Davison’s produce, sold fresh and locally at his family farm’s shop, contrasts with imported fruits often picked prematurely for long-distance transport. He sees potential for expanding fruit cultivation on land previously dedicated to grain, highlighting a shift toward crops that better suit the evolving climate and consumer preferences for fresh, local products.
Other farmers are also exploring unusual crops for the region. Oakley Farms near Wisbech, for example, has distributed thousands of watermelons to major supermarket Tesco. While such efforts point to the potential for commercial-scale production of new crops, experts caution that climate change brings unpredictable weather extremes that can threaten yields.
Professor Carol Wagstaff, an agricultural scientist at the University of Reading, notes that British farmers are increasingly focused on finding resilient crops that can tolerate risks posed by climate variability. She highlights that while warmer conditions might favor fruits like melons, peaches, and grapes, extreme weather events can devastate crops. Strategies under consideration include planting later in the season to better anticipate conditions, though some crops, like peach trees, require greater risks and patience before potential returns.
Despite the uncertainties, these agricultural experiments symbolize a broader adaptation to climate pressures. While traditional crops face challenges from drought, poor yields, and changing pest pressures, growers like Wyatt and Davison are betting on new possibilities that could redefine British farming in the coming decades.
