A madrasa teacher in Pabna Sadar upazila was detained late Thursday night following allegations of attempted sexual harassment of a student at a residential girls’ madrasa in Dorivaudanga village. The teacher, identified as Abu Eusuf Pramanik of Khalishpur village, has been employed at the Nurani Madrasa for approximately five years.
According to Inspector (Investigation) Sanjoy Kumar Saha, the incident occurred when Pramanik allegedly attempted to molest a student on Thursday night. The student managed to escape and alerted local residents, who then gathered at the madrasa. The crowd reportedly apprehended and assaulted the teacher until police intervened, rescuing him and taking him into custody.
The madrasa, which serves around 60 students including 30 who reside on campus, was evacuated by police that night. The residential students were subsequently handed over safely to their parents. However, shortly after the evacuation, a group of locals set the madrasa building on fire in the early hours of Friday morning.
Authorities said a formal case was being processed, and the situation in the area remained volatile. Additional police forces were deployed to maintain order and prevent further unrest. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
