PUTRAJAYA — Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was visibly emotional as he visited the grave of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, four days after her passing. Accompanied by family members, Dr Mahathir arrived at Pusara Negara at 11:05 a.m. on Thursday and spent approximately 20 minutes at her gravesite.
Observers noted that the former leader shed tears during the visit, reflecting on more than 70 years of marriage. Around 200 visitors who were also there to pay their respects reportedly gave him space and privacy during the solemn moment.
Earlier, the couple’s eldest child, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, had also been seen visiting the grave. Among other prominent figures paying tribute were former national badminton champion Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei, singer Datuk Ramli Sarip, and Putrajaya Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin.
Speaking to reporters, Lee Chong Wei shared memories of Dr Siti Hasmah’s dedication to supporting national athletes. He recalled her encouragement following defeats and her consistent backing regardless of outcomes. “When we won, she would send us congratulatory messages. But when we lost and needed support even more, she never gave up on us,” Lee said.
He added that Dr Siti Hasmah often reached out with words of consolation and motivation, telling players, “It’s okay, you’ve tried your best, you played very well, don’t give up, keep going.” Lee described these gestures as unforgettable.
Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali was widely respected for her contributions as a medical professional and as the spouse of one of Malaysia’s longest-serving prime ministers. Her death has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from various sectors, with numerous public figures visiting Pusara Negara to honor her memory.
