Patrick Retschko’s journey from delisted rookie to AFL Rising Star nominee has been marked by resilience and unexpected opportunity. After being released by Geelong last October, the 20-year-old Richmond wingman experienced a rapid career turnaround following a surprise phone call that paved the way for his return to the AFL with Richmond Football Club.
Retschko described the moment after learning of his delisting as devastating. “I was uncontrollably bawling,” he said, recounting how he left a small gathering early that night overwhelmed with emotion. The following day, while en route to Geelong’s best-and-fairest ceremony, Retschko received an unexpected call from Richmond’s football talent manager Blair Hartley. What initially seemed like a prank soon turned into a genuine opportunity. After several meetings, Richmond agreed to trade for Retschko, rejecting the initial plan to sign him as a delisted free agent.
Since joining Richmond, Retschko has appeared in six senior AFL games, culminating in a breakout performance during the club’s Dreamtime at the ‘G victory over Essendon. In that match, he recorded 27 disposals and gained nearly 500 metres, earning praise from officials and fans alike. Two of the four judges for the Yiooken Award named him best on ground, with Darcy Parish ultimately claiming the honor; Retschko finished a close second.
“It was an unreal night, it still hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Retschko said, reflecting on the game’s electric atmosphere. He described the final quarter as a sustained surge by Richmond, with teammate Noah Roberts-Thomson’s goal sparking a euphoric response. The win secured Retschko’s nomination for the AFL Rising Star award this week.
A lifelong Richmond supporter, Retschko’s connection to the club runs deep. He recalled attending Dreamtime at the ‘G games amid the Tigers’ “dark days” and “golden days” and looking up to former Tiger great Michael Mitchell, a personal hero of his family. The two even recreated a 2017 photo from Retschko’s youth, marking a poignant moment for the emerging player.
As Richmond prepares for this week’s clash against Sydney, Retschko acknowledges the team still faces challenges ahead. However, his quick progression from disappointment to recognition illustrates both his own determination and the club’s belief in his potential.
