The popular television series Ted Lasso is returning with a new season centered on a women’s football team, marking a significant shift from its previous focus on the fictional men’s Premier League club Richmond FC. Originally intended to conclude after three seasons, the show gained widespread acclaim during the pandemic for its heartwarming portrayal of an American football coach navigating English soccer. The series ended in 2023 with the protagonist, Ted Lasso, returning to his family in Kansas.

Now, three years later, the creators have revived the show with a fresh storyline. Following a brief hiatus, co-creator Brendan Hunt, who also plays Coach Beard, revealed that a women’s team at Richmond was an idea that emerged during their break. Jason Sudeikis, the actor portraying Ted Lasso, proposed revisiting the character through this new angle. The upcoming season begins in Kansas, where the team travels to persuade Ted to bring his coaching skills to Richmond’s newly formed women’s side, introducing a largely new ensemble of players and staff.

The creative team cited the challenges of sustaining the original cast’s storyline over multiple seasons, noting that many characters appeared unlikely to remain with the same club indefinitely. Starting fresh with a women’s team allowed the series to explore new dynamics and stories while maintaining the optimistic spirit central to the show.

New cast members include Abbie Hern, known for her work in Peaky Blinders; Faye Marsay, from Adolescence; and Tanya Reynolds, who appears as an assistant coach and is recognized for her role in Sex Education. British actress Hannah Waddingham, who plays Richmond’s owner Rebecca Welton and has since achieved success in Hollywood, praised the incoming cast. She highlighted the immediate connection viewers will develop with the new characters and noted that her own character finds a romantic storyline in the new season.

With the series set to premiere on Apple TV starting Wednesday, discussions are already underway about extending Ted Lasso beyond this revival. Fans of the show may find reassurance in the character’s enduring philosophy, encapsulated by his optimistic outlook: “You say impossible but all I hear is ‘I’m possible.’”
