The creative team behind the comedy series Ted Lasso explored the possibility of bringing back actor Anthony Head for the season four finale before his passing earlier this year. Brendan Hunt, co-creator of the show and actor playing Coach Beard, disclosed that there were discussions about Head reprising his role as Rupert, the philandering owner of the fictional football club AFC Richmond.
Hunt explained that the team had hoped to include Head in the concluding episode of the latest season, which aired on Wednesday. However, they were informed that this would not be feasible. While the writers had conceived a brief appearance for Rupert during the pivotal shareholder meeting scene, the plan ultimately did not materialize.
Anthony Head, known for his prior roles including in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died in June at the age of 72. His character’s absence was noted by fans, as Rupert’s storyline has been a significant element throughout the show. The Ted Lasso team’s effort to reintegrate Head highlights the actor’s valued contribution to the series and the impact of his loss on the production’s final chapters.
