An 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged with sexually abusing a woman who was traveling with four children on a New York City subway train, authorities said Wednesday. The incident occurred on June 28 around 3 p.m. on a northbound R train approaching the W. 28th Street station in Manhattan.
According to the criminal complaint, Ari Shtein stood behind the 30-year-old victim, who was accompanied by children aged between 7 and 11, when he allegedly inserted his fingers inside her without her consent. The children were present during the incident but were not physically harmed. After the attack, the victim exited the train at the W. 28th Street station and reported the incident to police. She was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police later released a photo of Shtein, captured on the train, in connection with the investigation. Shtein surrendered to authorities alongside his attorney and faces charges including aggravated sexual abuse and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Shtein has an address in Washington, D.C., although it remains unclear whether he currently resides there or in New York City. He reportedly has no prior arrest record in New York. His attorney, Priya Chaudhry, was not immediately available for comment.
Prosecutors requested bail be set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond. However, Shtein was released on his own recognizance. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 26. Authorities continue to investigate the case.
