A 17-year-old e-bike rider died Wednesday morning after colliding with a sport utility vehicle near City Hall in Manhattan, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred just before 9 a.m. at the intersection of Centre Street and Chambers Street, during the rush hour commute.

Gabriel Nacato, a Brooklyn resident, was traveling northbound on Centre Street when he veered out of the designated bike lane into the lane occupied by motor vehicles. At that point, he struck a 2008 black Chevrolet Tahoe that was traveling in the same direction. Emergency medical personnel responded promptly but pronounced Nacato dead at the scene, which is located just blocks from the New York Police Department headquarters and the lower Manhattan court buildings.

The driver of the Tahoe, a 40-year-old woman, remained at the scene, and police confirmed that she is not facing any charges in connection with the collision. Authorities indicated that Nacato was carrying a school identification card when found, and toxicology reports showed no presence of alcohol or drugs in his system.

The New York Police Department’s Collision Investigation Squad has taken over the case and is conducting a thorough examination of the circumstances leading up to the crash. The site of the collision is near the exit ramp of the Brooklyn Bridge, within the busy Civic Center area of lower Manhattan.
