In December 2023, an 18-year-old Emirati youth suffered a severe brain injury after being thrown from an e-bike during his first ride, marking the beginning of a challenging medical journey. The accident prompted immediate hospitalization at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi, where doctors identified life-threatening brain hemorrhages.
Upon admission on December 9, 2023, a CT scan revealed post-traumatic right subarachnoid and subdural hemorrhages, resulting in dangerously elevated intracranial pressure. Due to the critical nature of his condition, the teenager was intubated, sedated, and administered muscle relaxants. The following day, neurosurgeons performed a right fronto-temporoparietal decompressive craniectomy, a procedure that involved removing a portion of his skull to alleviate pressure on the brain.
Despite the surgery, the patient encountered multiple complications during the weeks that followed. He developed a cerebrospinal fluid leak and sepsis linked to aspiration pneumonia, which necessitated intensive care management. On December 26, a tracheostomy was carried out to aid his breathing, and a lumbar drain was placed to manage the fluid leak. Surgeons later conducted a cranioplasty to reconstruct the missing skull segment.
The teenager’s initial hospital stay lasted roughly three weeks, with his care overseen by a multidisciplinary team that included neurosurgeons, critical care physicians, and rehabilitation specialists. Dr. Musaab Ali Al Ramsi, Chairman of the Department of Critical Care Medicine at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, emphasized the complexity of treating such severe traumatic brain injuries and highlighted the coordinated efforts of the medical team in the patient’s care.
Following his prolonged hospitalization, the young man underwent extensive rehabilitation, which interrupted his education for nearly two and a half years. Nevertheless, he demonstrated remarkable resilience, completing his high school education and preparing to enlist in the United Arab Emirates National Service.
The case underscores both the risks associated with e-bike use and the importance of specialized, multidisciplinary medical intervention in managing severe brain trauma. It also highlights a narrative of recovery and determination in the face of life-altering injury.
