A 19-year-old Sudanese national, Chan Mathok Atak, has been charged with endangering others while allegedly piloting a large dinghy carrying 165 migrants from France to the United Kingdom on Thursday. The National Crime Agency reported that Atak faces the charge following the crossing, which involved what has been described as a "mega dinghy" approximately 13 meters (42 feet) in length—comparable to the size of a bus.

Atak has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Margate magistrates’ court. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the circumstances of the journey or the migrants involved.

According to Home Office data, 13,007 migrants have crossed the Channel into the UK so far this year, representing a 45 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. On the day of the incident, 366 migrants were reported to have arrived in the UK aboard three separate boats, with sea conditions described as calm.

Refugee groups have highlighted concerns about the increasing dangers associated with Channel crossings, pointing out that the number of migrants per boat has been rising, making the journeys more perilous. The crossing route remains a significant challenge for both UK authorities and migrant communities, with safety issues and legal enforcement continuing to be central concerns amid ongoing efforts to manage migration across the Channel.
