Tehran’s City Theater is set to present a production of Martin McDonagh’s play “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” beginning July 26, with performances continuing through August 19. The staging is directed by Hirbod Oliyai and features actors Mobina Kalateh, Ghazal Tafahomi, Shayan Torgheh, and Amir Hossein Zareian, with voice acting by Nima Reisi.

Originally written in 1996, “The Beauty Queen of Leenane” first premiered in London, where it received a nomination for Best New Play at the 1997 Laurence Olivier Awards. The play later opened on Broadway in 1998, garnering six Tony Award nominations and winning four. It also received the 1998 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play.

Set in the mountainous region of Connemara, County Galway, the drama centers on Maureen Folan, a lonely woman in her early 40s, and her manipulative mother, Mag. The story unfolds as Mag interferes in Maureen’s attempt to pursue a romantic relationship, triggering a series of events that build toward a chilling conclusion. The narrative explores themes of family dysfunction, human desperation, and the darker aspects of human nature, balancing dark humor with intense emotional tension.

The Tehran production aims to capture the complex interplay of humor and tragedy that characterizes McDonagh’s work, highlighting the psychological depth and bleak realism of the original play.
