Tej Lalvani, former investor on the BBC television program Dragons' Den, is set to sell his family-owned vitamins business, Vitabiotics, to the US private equity firm Bain Capital in a deal valued at approximately £900 million. Founded in 1971 by Lalvani’s father, Vitabiotics markets a range of health supplement products, including well-known brands such as Wellman and Pregnacare, across roughly 70 countries.

Since taking a leading role in the company, Lalvani has overseen significant growth, with annual global sales doubling to £195.6 million as of the most recent figures from 2015 onwards. He has expressed confidence that Bain Capital’s investment, pending regulatory approval, will accelerate the company’s efforts in product innovation and further international expansion.

Vitabiotics has established itself as a prominent player in the nutraceutical sector, targeting a diverse consumer base with specialized supplements aimed at various health needs. Under Lalvani’s stewardship, the firm expanded both its product portfolio and its global market reach.

The transaction reflects ongoing interest from private equity firms in the health and wellness industry, which has experienced steady demand growth amid increasing consumer focus on preventive healthcare and nutrition. The sale will mark a significant shift in ownership for Vitabiotics, transitioning the business from family-led to institutional ownership aimed at scaling the company’s presence worldwide.

Further details about the terms of the deal and the timeline for completion are contingent upon regulatory clearances. Both parties anticipate that the partnership with Bain Capital will enable Vitabiotics to build on its current success while exploring new growth opportunities across emerging markets.
